So often, we reach a point in our lives where we become overzealous when it comes to exercising. And it almost feels like exercising is an activity which may soon go out of fashion. Some of the most common examples are athletes who return to playing after attending a rehab program, individuals who indulge themselves in a sedentary lifestyle and then suddenly want to lose weight. Rhabdomyolysis here occurs when intense physical activity results in the damage to your skeletal muscles.
What happens when you undertake a sudden intense workout? The overproduction of heat depletes adenosine triphosphate (ATP), causing the dysfunction of calcium ion pumps. This leads to an increase of intracellular calcium, activating protease, thereafter producing reactive oxygen which then damages the skeletal muscle. During this time the dead muscle cells release their contents, which include myoglobin, creatine kinase, phosphate, potassium, and urate.
Causes and risks
The risk is the highest when people take on new exercise regimens. Even very fit people can get themselves into trouble when they change their medium of exercise. When you use new muscle groups and work them out, avoid using them in a repetitive, intensive way. A runner switching to a bike might want to go slow during the initial few days.
